Obama’s Financial Overhaul may affect your next motorcycle purchase

by : Kempol Modification

President Obama’s financial overhaul may have an effect on the financial institutions of manufacturers like BMW and Harley-Davidson, manufacturers that provide buyers with loans directly from their institutions.

These companies own state-chartered industrial loan companies that benefit from federally insured deposits and lend money, but are not regulated as heavily as normal banks. The Obama administration’s plan would force companies with ILC charters to register as bank-holding companies with the Federal Reserve.

Does this mean you won’t be able to get that loan for the tire burning, corner cutting sport-bike you’ve been eyeing up? No, it may be more difficult for first time buyers to obtain a loan though. It does mean that you might have to go to a real bank to get your loan. The good part is you may not get charged the 20-something percentage rate that comes along with borrowing from some of these institutions.

And don’t think these companies will back down without a fight. Even if regulation makes it more expensive, those firms that depend on providing such loans will presumably accept the stricter oversight that comes with owning a bank.

So, if you’re under the age of 20 years old, you might not be able to go out and buy a brand new R1 or a BMW K1300S, but I’m sure there are tons of bikes that you can afford without signing your life away at the dealership for 25 percent interest.

Types Of Motorcycle Fairings Prevalent Today

by : Kempol Modification

Motorcycle fairing is the shell positioned over the frame of sports bikes and racing motorcycles mainly to reduce the air drag. It also protects the driver from wind, weather and debris and cushions the vehicle in case of a crash. As speed of the motorcycle increases, body of a motorcyclist experiences increasing wind resistance that slows down the bike. With fairings, a biker can duck low and nullify almost all air resistance.

Types of Fairings Depending on Coverage Area

Depending on area of coverage fairings may be full, half or quarter.

• Full fairing – They cover both lower and upper portions of the motorcycle, minimizing air drag and providing protection to the engine, gearbox and chassis.

• Half fairings – They feature a windscreen, extending below the handlebars. Many half-faired models have kits by original manufacturers to convert them to full fairings.

• Quarter fairing – This generally comprises a windscreen and minimum fairing around the headlight.

• Belly Pan Fairings – These are used in combination with quarter or half fairings below the engine to minimize the aerodynamic lift and to increase the appeal of the bike.

Types of Fairings Depending on Their Placement

• Depending on their position you can have
• front fairing
• rear fairing
• left body fairing
• right body fairing, and
• tail fairing.

There are some specialized fairings manufacturers that have come up with innovative and attractive fairings, adding a new dimension to the biking experience.

Some popular motorcycle fairings brands:

• Batwing fairing: Clean aerodynamic shape, easily detachable, 36 inch wide and 17 inch tall, without windshields from Memphis. Windshields are available in three heights and seven colors. The inner wall is black textured, ABS outer shell is black and paint ready. However, it is not compatible with any other windshield other than Batwing.

• AirMaster Universal Deluxe Fairing: Way ahead of time, this subtle and classy styling of Kuryakyn fairings will set a different look for your bike. The attractive standard features and tempting list of optional accessories make it one of the finest fairings in the market, especially, for music buffs. Stereo, CD, AM & FM, specially designed and fitted speakers, direct ipod control, and glove compartment are some of its distinct features. It can be fitted to all types of bike.

• Arlen Ness Fairing: Designed to be used on all front ends, its body is constructed by heavy ABS plastic and the windshield is made of smoked plexiglass. It is smart, good looking and inexpensive.

• Premeux Classic Fairing: These fairings give excellent protection from wind and rain. Made of composite fiberglass, chromed brackets, and black gel coat surface, these are available ready to be painted to match the colors of the motorcycle. Inside the inner fairings enough place for speaker mounts, antenna and glove box are kept.

Gone are the days of Dustbin fairings and Dolphin fairings. Today, fairings have become an integral part of design and style statement of a sports or racing motorcycle. The increasing craze for stylish fairings has encouraged the leading manufactures to come with aftermarket fairing kits to be fitted to their respective models. They are now offering a whole new updated range of fairings that may be full or half, depending upon the choice. It is time to gear up for a whole new biking experience!

Packing for A Motorcycle Tour – Top Ten Tips

by: Kempol Modification

It’s always a problem knowing what to pack for a motorcycle tour. Fortunately, that feeling of utter freedom we get when we are riding our bikes far outweighs the problem of limited luggage space. Having said that, the problem doesn’t go away, but by applying a little thought, it can be overcome. Here are some tips to make life easier on the road.

TRAVEL LIGHLTY

It’s tempting to throw as much as possible into your panniers, but remember, every ounce you pack onto your bike reduces handling qualities. Add to this a pillion and the needle on the pleasure-ometer begins to swing to the low side. Of course, there are some things that you can’t do without, but the keyword here is need. Take what you need and nothing more. If you are going on an organised guided tour, the company should (if it’s worth its salt) have a back-up vehicle that will carry your luggage.

PACK SENSIBLY

To optimise the handling of your bike, place heavy items at the bottom of your panniers.

BEFORE YOU GO

In the weeks leading up to your planned tour, begin making a list of what you might need to take with you. At this stage, it doesn’t matter if the list is too long; you can always cross things off as the time draws nearer. By using this method, you will ensure that the things you take with you are what you really need. You will also reduce the risk of leaving behind an essential item.

MOTORCYCLE LUGGAGE

Unless you like riding for hours with a rucksack strapped to your back, it’s invariably better to have panniers and back box. Detachable panniers are great; they can be unhooked as carried like a suitcase. Belt bags are also popular for carrying things like money, credit cards and mobile phone.

TO ROLL OR NOT TO ROLL

You’ll have to decide this for yourselves, but personally speaking I prefer to roll my clothes before placing them in a bag inside the panniers. Other riders like to lay things flat, but it doesn’t work for me. Some bikers like to use zippable plastic bags that are sat upon to squeeze out the air before they are sealed. They claim that the vacuum keeps their clothes crease-free, but of course, I’m just not heavy enough (hee-hee).

TANK BAGS

Tank bags are fine and some of expandable ones can hold quite a lot of luggage, but it does take the fun out of it a little bit for me. If you’re going on a tour with a back-up vehicle, you only have to put up with the tank bag until you reach your starting point, then someone else carries it for you; great.

PLASTIC SEALABLE BAG

It’s always good to keep your smelly socks away from your good clothes. How many times have you gone into your luggage and found that you can’t decide whether you’ve worn those socks once before or not?

SMALL ITEMS

Very often small items are forgotten, such as; mobile phone charger, camera, camera batteries, first-aid kit, toiletries etc. This is when list-making comes into its own. If you’re going to a hot country, don’t forget your insect bite/sting cream. Something I always carry is a pack of tissues; I know it’s just a small item, but it comes under ‘Essentials’ for me.

REALLY ESSENTIAL

If you get as excited as I do prior to a motorcycle tour, please pay extra attention to making sure that you are carrying your bike documents and driving licence. If you are going overseas, don’t forget your passport, or you’ll be turning around and going home. .

DON’T FORGET

Unless you are heading for some remote region, there will always be a chance to buy things that you forget, but you aren’t really going on a shopping trip so try to remember as much as you can. No doubt, there will be something you need, and it can be fun finding these things in a foreign town, but if the list is long, it can become tiresome.

Well, you’ve packed and you’re on your way. Have a great time and ride safely. May the roads be long and winding, and the sky blue.

History of Woman and Motorcycle

by : Kempol Modification

The motorcycle didn't spring full-blown into this world. Rather, it evolved from the earlier bicycle. Women loved bicycles for the mobility and freedom they allowed. In fact, Susan B. Anthony said, "The bicycle has done more for the emancipation of women than anything else in the world."
In the 1880s, bicycles were a huge fad. Then, in 1885, Gottlieb Daimler made one that had an engine. Strictly speaking, it wasn't a bicycle, because it had four wheels instead of two. Two were safety wheels. This bike went a magnificent and stately 12 miles per hour.
An idea was born, and soon other motorized bicycles were invented. Perhaps the first true motorcycle was a charcoal fired two -wheeler made in 1869 by Sylvester Roper of Massachusetts.

Within two decades, motorcycles were being mass-produced. The first such bike was the Orient-Aster, which was made by the Metz Company of Waltham, Massachusetts. This state clearly loved its bikes. Another early cycle was the beloved Indian, made by the Hendee Manufacturing Company in Springfield, Massachusetts. (Later, the company changed its name to Indian Motorcycles.)

In 1902, Harley Davidson sold its first three motorcycles, and soon there were dozens of manufacturers. They had names like Marvel, Exelsior, and Henderson. The Depression killed off all but Indian and Harley, and soon only Harley remained.

Women enjoyed the motorcycles as much as they had enjoyed bikes. After all, they were economical and fun. They also didn't have the stigma that they acquired later. Early riders were seen as adventuresome, not as outlaws.

In 1915, Indian motorcycles offered front and rear shocks. Since these cushioned the ride, people began to consider long-distance travel as a real option. That year, a mother-daughter team, Avis and Effie Hotchkiss, rode from New York to San Franciso. They didn't take the direct route. Instead, they meandered about, covering 5,000 miles.

The next year, two society women in their 20s, sisters Adeline and Augusta Van Buren bought a pair of Indian Powerplus Bikes. They were the first people ever to climb up and down Pike's Peak. They, too, completed a transcontinental ride. Their 3,300-mile trip took almost two months, and they had to contend not only with many unpaved roads, but also with social mores. Once they were arrested for publicly wearing trousers.

In the 1920s, Harley published a magazine called The Enthusiast. It sponsored Vivian Wales on a 5000 mile trip to a Harley factory. Another early motorcycle heroine was Bessie Stringfield, a.k.a. the Motorcycle Queen of Miami . She made 8 solo-cross country trips and was a motorcycle dispatch rider.

Bessie had started out with two strikes against her: she was a woman and she was African-American. At first, she couldn't even get a motorcycle license in Miami, Florida. However, a police officer interceded in her behalf.

Motorcycles were also used in wartime, which gave them a lot of public exposure. About 20,000 Harleys were used during the WWI. They were ridden by couriers, soldiers, and others.

As motorcycle popularity grew, it was only natural that some people became highly skilled in its use. They showed off these skills in motordromes, which had been around since the turn of the century but grew in popularity during the 1930s. A motordrome often advertised itself as "A Wall of Death."

Essentially, it was a giant barrel with a platform on top for viewers. They could look down on motorcyclists, who sped around the inside of the walls, held in place by centrifugal force. One of these early daredevils was Margaret Gast, who billed herself as "The Mile a Minute Gal." She was not the only woman daredevil. May Williams and Jean Perry also performed on the walls.

By 1940, the United States had its first women's motorcyle club, The Motormaids. Today, there are scores of such clubs. Anyone who wants more information about the history of women and motorcycles may want to check out the book Hear Me Roar: Women, Motorcycles, and the Rapture of the Road

Meaning of Colour

by : Kempol Modification

A biker in black craves protection; those in green will keep the motorcycle in good condition and a biker in blue is an insurer's dream. These are just some of the results of a recent study by Devitt and a leading colour psychologist to evaluate what the colour of leathers and motorcycles say about the the individual.
According to Angela Wright of Colour Affects, each colour has slightly different implications: the colour someone chooses for a motorcycle indicates his/her attitude to the activity itself, while the colour of the leathers indicates attitudes to oneself.
Although the most popular colours are comparatively predictable - for motorcycles: red, blue and black; for leathers: black and red - what each colour says about its rider makes for very interesting reading. "Many people think that colour is just a matter of how things look and it is often dismissed as being purely cosmetic. However, the truth is that colour is light - the source of life itself; there is nowhere that colour does not exist and our instinctive, unconscious response to it is a vital element in our survival," she says.
So, what, in Angela's opinion, can a biker learn from his or her own colours?
Beige: Calm, dependable, no fuss biker
Blue: A biker with clear thought, maturity and responsibility
Black: This biker requires protection from the outside world
Gold: Symbolises luxury, top-of-the-range, expense, sophistication and glamour
Green: Balanced and peaceful. The biker will keep the machine finely tuned
Grey: Enjoys a well-made, functional machine. Sometimes has slight low self-confidence
Mauve/Purple: Upmarket biker, but also rather naughty and self-indulgent.
Orange: A biker who likes physical comfort, pleasure and sensuality, though opposite to blue
Pink: A maternal biker, loving, nurturing and a strong assertion of the feminine
Red: The sign of strong and masculine biker, exhilarating and exciting
Silver: The biker who loves luxury, speed and fine engineering
White: The biker wants uncompromising, clean excellence and the world to keep away
Yellow: Self-confident and optimistic biker. Fun, yet more mature than the orange biker

Motorcycle safety tips

Motorcycles and scooters seem to get speedier every year. Yet there's never been so much traffic on our roads and that's a potential problem. In fact most of us could use a hint or two for handling the latest motorcycles round both bustling cities and attractive, but potentially hazard-laden, country lanes. But when riding demanding motorcycles through common troublespots, learning from your own mistakes can be painful or even fatal. And if you expect your mates to have all the answers, you could well be disappointed. (Although some will probably claim to know quite a lot).
The best place to learn every trick in the book is, of course, back at school. Although at motorcycle school, lessons pass a bit quicker. You'll meet expert riders who are also great trainers. And you could even earn savings on insurance, clothing and accessories. That's worth it. An advanced motorcycling course can cost as little as a tank of fuel and take no more than an hour or two of your time.
Training centres nationwide can teach anything from two-up touring to knee-down track cornering, so they'll ask about your abilities and needs. But help is at hand if you're choosing a programme. Why not direct your enquiries to one of the following six professional resources?
1. The Driving Standards Agency 0115 901 2500
5.  The Institute of Advanced Motorists 0208 996 9600
6.  The police's " BikeSafe " programme 08452 307408

Modifications don't mean big insurance price hikes

by : Kempol Modification
Too many motorcycle owners are failing to tell their insurers about modifications to their motorcycles either because they fear the changes will increase their insurance premiums, or because they don't realise they need to. However, following a recent review, we can reveal that many of the most common modifications actually have little or no effect on premiums at all.
This contrasts with failing to tell an insurer about modifications which could result in the insurer refusing to pay when a claim is made - particularly if the modification is a factor in the claim. Many of Britain's bikers' favourite modifications have virtually no impact on insurance premiums. These include modifications such as crash bars, crash mushrooms, road legal after-market exhausts, huggers, up-rated braking systems and a five per cent increase in engine capacity.
Other modifications including wheels, suspension, Dynojet and tank pads may also be accepted by insurers and would result in only a moderate premium increase.
Modifications that are likely to be expensive to insure are: increasing engine capacity over five per cent, custom motorcycles and nitrous oxide injection.
Commenting on the review, Devitt's Managing Director William Hughes said: "One of the most important principles underlying any kind of insurance is that all relevant information must be passed on to the insurance company. That's the only way an insurer can understand precisely what risks they're covering and calculate a fair price."

Information about our Steerite Triple Tree Modification for Motorcycles with Sidecars or Trikes

by : Kempol Modification
Side Effect has led the way in North America designing and supplying the sidecar and trike industry with unique performance products. Extremely successful, and the most popular, is the system known as STEERITE. We take your triple trees and reduce the factory trail value to suit your sidecar or trike, it's available for almost every motorcycle and the steering difference is like night and day ----- so enjoyable!!
With over 30 years experience in this industry and vast technical resources we are able to reduce the active trail (caster) for sidecar/trike use resulting in a power steering effect, which eliminates wobbling, the constant pull to one side with sidecars and the heavy steering associated with many trike conversions and all work is done in-house to our extremely high standards. We also index into each individual steering conversion, a small degree of camber to offset the natural camber on most roads, to give you the sure footed confidence and pleasure when operating your converted motorcycle. The degree change will vary from model to model but the 'constant' here is a common reduced trail value, resulting in all models 'feeling' the same.
Also, let us clarify that our STEERITE conversion is not called a 'rake kit' as it is sometimes referred to. A motorcycle with a 'raked' (changed angle) front end has been done by cutting the steering head/frame to usually increase the steer tube angle and the amount of trail at the wheel (a decrease in this angle will result in reduction of trail but with undesirable quick steering). That procedure has nothing to do with the triple trees being modified. The STEERITE conversion increases the angle (sometimes wrongly referred to as 'rake') of the forks not the steering head and this results in a hardly noticeable appearance change caused by the small difference in angle between the frame steering head (steer tube) and the fork tubes. 'Raking' the frame (as is popular with custom V-twin show bikes) will increase trail; 'raking' the forks using modified triple trees for sidecar or trike use will decrease the trail, therefore we rake the forks, not the front end (the steer tube). Our STEERITE system lets us do a minimum angle change and we don't need fork spacers because allowing the front end to drop slightly, steepens the steer tube angle at the frame which contributes to trail reduction and keeps the triple tree angle change to a minimum. This should clear the air on terminology.

Tips on Chopping Motorcycle Frames

Choping Motorcycle Frames
by : Kempol Modification
  • Motorcyclists have long been drawn to choppers--bikes with long, sweeping front ends. Some riders simply buy one that has already been modified; others may want to make the changes themselves. There are several methods to make a chopper, with some easier than others. Safety, however, can be a worry if a rider chooses to cut corners when converting a motorcycle to a chopper. Also, frame modifications can affect the value of a bike, as well as its insurance premiums. If either is a concern, an owner may want to go another route.

Take It Down

  • The easiest way to get that chopper look is to drop the rear end of the motorcycle. Most can be dropped up to six inches in the back, and a corresponding amount of additional length can then be added to the front forks, which are the arms that connect the motorcycle frame and axle. Lowering kits are available from many cycle shops. Going this route, however, can mean a loss of the cushion provided by shock absorbers. Some riders counteract that by riding with less air pressure in the rear tire than used previously. That can result in a bike that handles much differently, so caution should be used with this approach.

Rake It

  • Another method of chopping a bike without major modifications is to put on a set of raked triple trees--a yoke that clamps the forks to the frame. Raked trees change the angle of the front forks, usually by between three and seven degrees; however, they should be used with caution. The more the angle changes, the more the bike leans forward, which ultimately can cause the motorcycle to become unstable during use.

    Frame Modification

    • For the mechanically inclined, or those who want to use traditional methods for chopping a bike, modifying the frame of the motorcycle may be the way to go. With this method, the tubing for the frame of the motorcycle is cut, and extension tubes placed in the cuts, then welded into place. The longer frame of the bike increases the rake of the front end, but, unlike installing raked trees, the motorcycle retains its stability.

    Conversion Kits

    • In recent years, chopper-conversion kits have become popular and allow riders to chop their bikes without modifying the frame. The kits are tailored to individual bikes, ensuring that motorcycles aren't raked beyond safe limits. The modifications also can be easily reversed, if wishing to return a bike to its original state. The downside is that such kits can be expensive.
